Cllr Lubbock Tours Beattie Passive Construction
Eaton City Councillor Judith Lubbock recently visited Beattie Passive, an organisation which manufactures Passivhaus modular buildings that can be used as schools, offices or homes.
Passivhaus modular homes combine all the energy efficiency, comfort and carbon-saving benefits of the Passivhaus standard with the speed and versatility of modular construction.
Their factory in Norwich on the old Britvic drinks site next to County Hall has been gradually expanding over the last 3 years, quietly bringing about a revolution in the construction industry.
Reflections from Judith:
After an inspirational talk by founder Sam Beattie, who also is a Passivhaus pioneer and environmentalist, guests were given a tour of the factory where the modular buildings were constructed, and a chance to see examples of retrofitting existing buildings and "tea cosying", which is where a whole outer layer is placed over the original building to achieve Passivhaus Standards.
Sam believes more developers should be building to Passivhaus Standards, building energy efficient, sustainable housing to tackle the housing crises, fuel poverty and climate change. In addition to the environmental benefits of this type of construction Passive Beattie have a track record of delivering social value benefits to local communities with their Flying Factories. When they partner with Councils, Housing Associations or developers across the country they set up a Flying Factory where they teach the vital skills to young people for the construction of their modular buildings. Apart from skilling up a new generation of construction workers in a new process there are transport costs savings to be made in not having to transport the modular building from Norwich.
I am looking forward to seeing examples of Beattie Passive buildings on the ground in Norwich in the near future. It’s the Passivhaus Standard that raises living standards for its occupants, lowers their energy bills and cuts their carbon emissions. It ticks all the boxes.
