Lib Dems choose James Wright for Norwich South

James Wright, the Lib Dem group leader at City Hall, is standing for the Liberal Democrats in Norwich South in the likely inevitable general election.

James, who has represented Eaton ward since 2010, is currently chair of the council scrutiny committee and contested the Norwich South seat in 2017.

James has been a vocal campaigner against Brexit and worked to elect two Lib Dem MEPs for the East of England this May, an election that saw the Lib Dems finish way ahead of both Labour and the Conservatives.

James said, "On the biggest issue facing our country the Liberal Democrats have a clear position: we are the party of remain. This Tory government is in turmoil, and the Labour Party still doesn't know if it is coming or going on Brexit. The Brexit deal will be bad for the people of Norwich South, and the Lib Dems will be offering the people of Norwich South a sensible, principled option at the upcoming general election."

"The Lib Dems are clear - the best deal we will get is the one we already have as a full member of the EU. We are ready to fight a general election, but the best way to resolve the Brexit issue is to put Johnson's deal to the people in a new referendum, where the Lib Dems will campaign to remain in the EU."

James has lived in Norwich all his life, attending local schools and City College, and currently provides IT services to schools in Norfolk. He has recently taken up running and attends Saturday parkruns whenever he can.

James has used his position on the city council to take action on the climate emergency - securing support to establish a climate and environment committee earlier this year, and bringing forward suggestions to practical measures that can be taken by the council. He is not new to this, and as a 16-year-old remembers taking part in a campaign to stop the council building a road through some of our city's valuable green space.

He demands better for residents in Norwich South, campaigning to secure more affordable housing and to stop land banking by developers and to ensure that local schools have the funding that they need to help our young people do their very best.
