Pothole Pandemic on our Roads
Norfolk has been granted around £4.5 million to speed up the backlog in road and cycle path repairs.
Norfolk has been granted around £4.5 million from the ‘remnants’ HS2 cancellation to spend on highway maintenance schemes across the county, and particularly speeding up dealing with the backlog of reported pothole incidents. Any resident of our city would be acutely aware of the poor state of many of our roadas and cycle path, which appears borne out in the increased number of pothole incidents that have been reported in Norwich in recent times.
The Lib Dem Group unreservedly welcome the additional money that is likely to be made available to deal with outstanding highways maintenance cases across Norfolk. Over 23,000 compensation claims for damage or injury from potholes has been made across the UK during 2023. – equivalent to 63 day.
Brian Watkins, Leader of the Lib Dems on Norfolk County Council said:
Cllr Brian Watkins, Leader of the Lib Dems in Norfolk
"This Conservative Government has presided over a ‘pothole pandemic’ on our roads and is firmly to blame for the poor state of our local road network having slashed essential funding over the past few years. Although our highways team and contractors have done their level best to deal with the backlog of cases, they have been hamstrung by a lack of sufficient funding to carry out the work properly. The Lib Dems firmly believe that local councils need to have their highways maintenance budgets restored in full, so that we can end this vicious cycle of pothole payouts and see some much-needed improvements for motorists."
