Shared use cycleways call

Council must ensure more enlightened approach

The Lib Dems are calling on the Labour Council to do more to segregate cyclists and pedestrians on shared routes such as parts of Newmarket Road. This follows concerns expressed by some older pedestrians and parents with pushchairs about cyclists approaching from behind with no warning.

Although we welcome the implementation of better facilities for cyclists across Norwich, the right balance needs to be struck. Cycling is a healthy pursuit and important in terms of reducing the carbon footprint, but walking is important too. Lib Dem campaigner Silvia Schmidtova said, 'I think that there needs to be more flexibility within current guidance to allow white lines to be painted where appropriate or for 'share with care' signs to extended to roads outside the city centre.'

Jacob Hamilton criticised Labour for not making the best use of the money that it had received from central government and called for a more proactive approach.
